The Mount at Lock Bank
History surrounding selfcatering cottage in Sedbergh Cumbria in Yorkshire Dales
History of The Mount The Mount was built in 1923 by Matthew and Elizabeth Sedgwick. Matthew began a milk round in 1897 which is still in operation today. He also continued his joinery and building business as well as his small farm. He first built the Hylands (which is situated across the road) as a family home for his wife and eleven children. He later built The Mount as a retirement home for himself and Elizabeth, at a cost of £1,900. |
Matthew Elizabeth and nine of their children The Mount went out of the family in 1930 for a period of 16 years. It was bought by the Park family. In 1946 William Sedgwick the 8th child (seated on his fathers knee in the picture) purchased the house and lived in it with his wife Alice and their five children. William farmed at Lockbank with his eldest son Geoff carrying on the tradition. Alice continued to live in the house after her husbands death in 1966. She was living in the house up until her 97th year when she passed away in 2002. At which time Roger and Suzan (Geoff's son and daughter in law) purchased the Mount. |
